Hamilton, Ontario’s 1st Ever MMA Event – “Slammer in the Hammer”

MMA is coming to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada!

I am so excited to be able to finally say that and even more happy to be involved in bringing it here to my hometown.

It’s great to be able to provide some exciting MMA entertainment to the countless people in Hamilton that have supported me in so many ways throughout my own professional fighting career.

Our first event is taking place on Friday, June 17th, 2011 at Copps Coliseum and will feature 8-10 exciting MMA bouts.

and even more exciting is the fact that…

“Big” John McCarthy, MMA’s most popular official, has signed on as the “Slammer in Hammer’s” head referee!

It’s going to be awesome to have the sport’s first referee –Big John reffed UFC #1 back in the days– oversee our bouts from start to finish after yelling his famous line  ”LET’S GET IT ON!” to start the action.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday, April 9th starting at $35

Affordable pricing was the main goal when putting this event together because really I want all Hamiltonian MMA fans –and fans from surrounding areas as well– to be able to join in on this historic event.

MMA in Hamilton! I’m still pumped about it.

Too bad I was forced to retire before having the chance to fight in my own hometown. That would have been awesome!

If you make it to the fights, come up and say hi!

MMA Basics – Standing Up From Guard (Shoulder Post)

It’s been too long!

Too long since I posted a new MMA technique. I’ve been so busy with the new “Slammer in the Hammer” mixed martial arts event I’m promoting –on June 17th at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton– along with all of the other coaching I’ve been doing.

But I’m back and I promise to be back posting new, cool and useful stuff regularly.

In this video I show one way that I use often to work my way back to my feet from the closed guard position.

Team Joslin MMA Fighter Steve Bingham wins over George Abdallah at Border Wars!

Early this morning I got back after a fun night in Port Huron Michigan.

A small crew of us –Kevin, Mike, Antonio, and I–headed down with our fighter Steve Bingham and his family to the Border Wars mixed martial arts event.

Martial arts full contact sparring involves full force strikes and is different from medium and light sparring. Many karate enthusiasts consider full contact to be key training when learning unarmed combat skills. Canada’s online casino offers gambling for both fun and profit when you are not on the mat.

Steve, who was going into the fight with a 4-1 amateur record, fought in the main event against undefeated (3-0) fighter, George Abdallah from Adrenalin Training Center in London, Ontario.

Watching some of George’s previous fights, we had a strong feeling that he would try to attempt to use a thai style clinch in an attempt to knee Steve in the body and face. He had done exactly that really well in his previous victories.

We drilled many counters to that type of clinch and it definately paid off. Steve showed some good composure throughout the fight, landing some crisp strikes and reacted like a friggin Ninja to catch the armlock submission after only 32 seconds.

Here’s the fight vid…

A Newspaper Reporter’s First MMA Lesson…

Recently Hamilton Spectator reporter Jeremy Grimaldi stopped by to experience mixed martial arts training first hand. We entered the kickboxing ring at Joslin’s martial arts and I immediately put him to work ; One on one training, for nearly an hour straight starting with some basic punching and kicking techniques then progressing on to all of the other aspects of MMA including take downs, chokes and arm locks. When it was all over I must say that Iwas very impressed with Jeremy’s  work ethic and enthusiasm.

A few days later Jeremy wrote a cool article covering that first training experience and the sport in general. All the recent exposure that MMA has received in Ontario after becaming legal has caused many people to voice their opinions on the subject. Not surprisingly, there is still plenty of resistance towards the sport of mixed martial arts and it’s recent legalization in the province in Ontario. I really think the cause lies in a lack of education and a limited understanding as to what makes up the full contact sport and why athletes would choose to participate in it.

Yes, it’s a contact sport and there are definitely dangers associated with all contact sports including hockey, football, rugby, boxing and MMA, but the track record of MMA up to this point and time has proven that it is no more dangerous than any of the other sports I just mentioned. However things can change and if somehow in the future,  fighter’s begin to sustain serious and life altering injuries than I definitely support taking another look at it all.  I really don’t see that happening but for now, MMA deserves the chance it’s been given here in Ontario. Without a doubt the sport of mixed martial arts has earned it.

What people need to realize is that what they see on television, during a professional mixed martial arts bout, is drastically different from they way people train in the sport: Big Gloves (16 ounce) gloves are worn instead of the smaller 4 ounce versions; head gear is worn, sparring is optional; tapping out keeps submission holds from ever hurting your training partners; kids never spar with contact; lessons are well structured, great for physical conditioning and a ton of fun and black eyes and other injuries are extremely rare. If training was a rough as my pro fights I would have quit training a long, long time ago.

Those reasons are why I have hundreds of male and female students of all ages (3-60+) training boxing, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission wrestling and mixed martial arts multiple times per week. It’s user friendly, highly addictive and more fun than you would imagine.

Top 10 Ways to Become a Great Fighter!

I get asked a lot by people what does it take to make it to the UFC? That’s a tough question.

Throughout my career I never thought solely about the end goal of competing at the highest level of mixed martial arts competition. Instead I looked to improve my skills a daily basis; To get stronger in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, become a more dangerous striker, grow more talented in wrestling. My drive was to become the greatest fighter I could be knowing that if I continued to improve with each passing day, good things would come of it.

These simple principles will help you achieve anything you want in life. Whether you dream of becoming a world class poker player (if so, you should really check this site) or a professional boxer – read, apply and reap the rewards.

Along my journey I realized a few things that may help you along your own MMA path. Here they are:

1) Be humble – Realize you have a lot to learn and search it out

2) Don’t take your losses too seriously – Getting tapped in training, losing a tournament match or not coming out a winner during an MMA fight are all unavoidable occurrences on your way to becoming a great fighter.

3) Train with skilled partners – Try to wrestle with those that can wrestle, box with those that can box and so on…

4) Find a knowledgeable strength and conditioning coach and get yourself in the best shape possible. Your training sessions will be more productive and you’ll make greater gains with less effort.

5) Read books. Books about Martial arts technique, strategies and training; autobiographies about mixed martial artists and other athletes who have achieved the type of success you are looking to achieve; and books that focus on positive thinking, meditation and mental preparation for sports competition.

6) Compete as often as you can in a variety of martial arts and combat disciplines such as boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

7) Train in group classes, participate in seminars, take private lessons, watch instructional videos and videos of fights. And when you’re not training, visualize your training; reviewing in your mind what you have worked on lately and the things you plan to focus on in the future.

8 ) Keep a log of your training activities. Set a schedule as to what practice sessions you will attend for any given week and stick to it. Don’t allow yourself to miss class by making some random excuse.

9) When you go on vacation or are in the midst of travelling try to find places to train wherever you are go. It’s a lot of fun and very beneficial to roll, spar, practice and share ideas with new people so make sure you do it whenever you get the chance.

10) Believe in yourself. Know deep down inside that you will become a great fighter and achieve all of your dreams.
